A friend and I are trying to play minecraft on a private server, but we cannot purchase it. We would like to know how to download and play for free.

download the minecraft_server.exe file and run it, it should come up with a bunch or jargon and a graph, not important, just leave it as it is
then open up minecraft, go to multiplayer, click add server and in the server address box enter your local IP
if you don’t know it use this: http://www.whatismyip.com/
tell your friend to do the same, (that is enter YOUR IP, not his)
hey presto, your machine is now hosting a minecraft server that you are playing on
now this has been very buggy in the past during beta, if you can’t both connect i recommend you use a program like hamachi when you host, just enter the IP hamachi gives you, not your local IP
